Mean people suck.

I always imagined the craft beer industry to be filled with cool people. We all love the same delicious, handcraft product and want to share it with others. I guess my personal views may be a bit Utopian.

Now, just over six years into the business, I find myself growing a bit weary, tired, frustrated, saddened.

mean people suck; just be niceSome days it feels like stupid high-school shenanigans all over again. There’s all kinds of cliques, and some of the kids are just plain mean. Not because you’ve done anything to them. Heck, you may have never even spoken to them just because you run in different circles (nothing personal, just never been in the same room). But then you hear that they are talking crap about you. And you don’t hear it from just one person. You hear it from two, then three, then four,…all the same story. With so many people saying the same thing, you know it’s got to be true.

In this case, it’s another small business owner. I don’t know him personally, but he’s been telling folks in the beer industry that he wants to “put me out of business.”

My colleague repeats, “He wants to put you out of business.”

Huh? I don’t even know this guy. I thought he would be cool because he loves craft beer.

I am, surely, naive.

I’m a small business owner. Together with my husband, I own a beer store. I have poured my heart and soul into this business, along with most of my personal assets. I love the product. So many of my customers have become friends, some even like family. I am responsible for keeping this business afloat, to make sure it generates enough income to be viable and to provide for the households of my staff, myself. I work long hours. Overall, I love my job. Sure, there are ups-and-downs like in any other retail job. But working with craft beer, what’s not to love?

I’ve never done anything wrong to this person, nor have I said anything bad about his business or him. I don’t even know the guy.

I guess some people are just mean.

And it sucks.

It sucks to be targeted by someone who hates you and your business so much that he’s going around telling folks he wants to put you “out of business.” Someone you don’t even know, but who you’d imagine would be cool because he loves craft beer. Instead, he’s just a hater.

My friends say, “haters gonna hate” and “karma will come around.”

I just find it all a bit appalling.
And saddening. And frustrating.

This type of thing disgusts me to a core level.

Even in craft beer, there are mean people. And I think that sucks. There should be no mean people in craft beer.

Too bad we can’t live in a nice Utopian world, where we are happy for each other’s successes, are compassionate about each other’s losses, and share our love of craft beer with each other.
